General Information and Breed History

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was recognized by the AKC in 1935.  It is said to be the oldest of all British dog breeds going back to 1200 BC. They are a herding dog and have worked as an all-around farm dog, family protector, athlete, and hunting partner.

General Appearance

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are low to the ground, with a long body, heavy boned and are deep-chested, their tail is bushy like a foxtail. These dogs may be small, but don’t let their size fool you, because they are super fast!

Body 

The body of a Welsh Corgi is long and strong.  They are heavy-boned and deep-chested. The neck is well set on strong shoulders.  

Coat

Corgis have a medium-length double coat, making it very dense.  The outer hairs are slightly coarse and never wiry, curly or silky.  It lies smooth and weather resistant. Their undercoat is soft, thick, and short.  They are seasonal shedders. The hair should be kept short on the ears, legs, and head; medium length on the body, and thicker on the thighs, backs, and underside of their tail.

Babies/Children

Corgis are very intelligent, playful, and most loyal to their families.  The corgi dog breed is not recommended for families that have kids under the age of 5 years old.

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are known to nip at the heels of young children as an attempt to herd them. They do very well with older children and should always be supervised by an adult.  

Other Dogs and Animals 

They do get along just fine with family pets. The Corgi was bred to chase away strays from their property, they can become very territorial in the presence of cats and dogs they are unfamiliar with.

Care Requirements 

Exercise

You may think that a small dog equals little to no exercise.  This would be an incorrect assumption. The corgi requires daily exercise and LOTS of mental stimulation to keep it healthy and out of trouble.  Try some dog sports to keep this dog physically and mentally healthy.

Grooming and Coat Info

Cardigan Welsh Corgis do not require a lot of grooming.  They shed their outer long-haired coat in the spring.  Expect to find hair everywhere in your house. Use a pin brush daily to remove the undercoat. After brushing smooth the hair back down with a comb.  They only require an occasional bathing. 

Health & Nutrition 

Health

Being low to the ground, this breed is open to back issues.  To avoid back issues, make sure the dog does not jump off beds, stairs or other high above ground furniture. 

 Nutrition

Cardigans do well on high-quality dog food.   Visit your veterinarian and ask about what brand will be best for your corgi.   These dogs can pack on the pounds quick. Give them two small meals a day, and do NOT overfeed them with snacks.  A way to check if they are overweight is to feel for their ribs. Take your dog to the vet if you cannot feel their ribs as this is an indication that the dog is overweight.

Training 

These guys like to be in charge and don’t like to take orders.   The good news is that with time and patience, this dog can be trained.  They are highly intelligent and love to please. If you find you are having a very hard time training, try a dog sport like obedience training as this herding dog excels in both sports.
