Being both charming and ingenious at the same time is something I’ve always admired about the Gemini.  And you Gemini know how cool that is, don’t you?  And if I were to say anything to the contrary, I’m sure I’d find the argumentative side of Gemini as well.  

Despite being a tad unpredictable, Gemini is a lot of fun to be around.  And so are our beautiful furry friends, the Canis lupus familiaris.  But, which of our furry friends best suits the enigmatic Gemini?  Let’s find out the best dog breeds for the Gemini, shall we?

Before we dive into the Gemini dog breeds, let’s go over a few things so we’re on the same page here.  We’ll start with a few definitions which you will likely run into in this article.

Some Useful Definitions In This Article

1. Astronomy – the scientific study of celestial objects and all phenomena which occurs outside of the Earth’s atmosphere
2. Astrology – the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world
3. Constellation – a group of stars forming a pattern in the sky.  Constellations are often perceived as portraying mythological figures, creatures, and deities.
4. Precession – the slow movement of the axis of a spinning body around another axis.  In the case of Earth, the geographic north pole wanders around in a circle which takes about 26, 000 years to complete one cycle.  Think of it like a top, a top never spins perfectly straight but the tip can wander in circles, so to speak.
5. Zodiac – the belt of the sky within about eight degrees of the ecliptic which is divided into twelve regions.  The position of the sun relative to the Earth at the time of your birth determines the sign or region of the zodiac, that will be yours for life.

How The Zodiac Works

So, here we are ready to talk about which dog breeds are the best for the Gemini, and it occurs to me that we’d better take a quick look at how we came to these conclusions in the first place.  Let’s begin with a little about the zodiac.

I’m a bit of a skeptic.  That is to say; I tend to follow empirical data more so than faith. With that in mind, I do believe in the concept of the zodiac.  However, it took some exciting science and history combined to bring me to this end conclusion.  I’ll take you on my journey, but we need to define how the zodiac works in the first place.

The zodiac, in its contemporary form, is an imaginative way of mapping the sky to make a sort of model of the heavens and the Earth’s movement within it. 

If you take a look at my illustration above, it makes this a little easier to explain.  Notice the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and how there is an outer band of constellations.  This illustration is not to scale, just in case you had any doubt about that.  

When we look up to the sky at night, we see all kinds of stars.  Over millennia, these stars have come to form images we call constellations.  I’ll get into the history of this in a bit.  These constellations are visible all year as we travel around the Sun, but their position in the sky appears to change.  This change of location is due to our movement and relative point of view. 

The stars are moving, all in their orbits and trajectories.  Due to being so far away, many of these movements have to be tracked over many years and are not perceptible to the human eye.  

As we move around the Sun, the constellations which are ‘behind’ the Sun change depending on our perspective.  We have created many constellations, but for the zodiac, we are concerned with twelve significant constellations.  These constellations form the twelve regions we call houses of the zodiac.  

Getting back to my illustration above, when we look up at the sky, and the Sun is ‘hiding’ one of the constellations, we say that the Sun is in the house of that particular zodiac sign. 

For example, in the illustration, we see that the Earth is in the part of its orbit, which is in December or January.  From the perspective of the Earth, the Sun is in the house of Capricorn.  Therefore, people who are born at that time would be of the Sun sign Capricorn.

The Sun sign is the significant zodiac sign with which we are all familiar.  However, we each have a zodiac sign for the moon and each of the planets.  Most people don’t know all their manifestations, but they are all affecting us in subtle ways.  

Modern Alignments

The zodiac houses, which we just discovered create a sort of map of the heavens, broken down into twelve regions, are in a particular alignment.  The new zodiac uses what is called the Tropical zodiac for its alignment. 

The Tropical zodiac is aligned with our equinoctial points of orbit.  But, what on Earth do equinoctial points mean?  What are they?  I’d better define that one.

The Earth’s axis is tilted, as most people know.  The tilt is concerning the plane of our orbit around the Sun.  And the Sun itself has an inclination to its axis of spin, which is about six degrees off the plane of travel, which holds the planets’ orbits.  

Imagine that both our Earth and the Sun radiated a disc, like giant rings like Saturn has, out into the Solar System.  Due to the tilt of our Earth and the tilt of the Sun, our two discs or rings would only line up with each other at distinct points of the year.  These two points are known as the equinoctial points, and they are used to align the tropical zodiac with our orbit.

Let’s talk a bit about how we got here in the first place.

A Little Zodiac History (Western Zodiac)

The idea of mapping the stars is nothing new to our society.  Humans have been fascinated with the sky above ever since we were blessed with the ability to look up and wonder.  And our modern concept of the zodiac and constellations goes back some time into the past.  But we didn’t always look up at the heavens with the same sort of perspectives.

The first known use of the constellations goes back about three thousand years.  At least, the first depiction of constellations does anyway.  There is much conjecture as to where and who the first constellations were created or discussed.  Many scholars point to the Greeks as being the first to use constellations.  I don’t believe this to be the case, and I think there is strong empirical evidence to support this.

The Proof Is In The Sky Above

There are some exciting things to note when we look up at the sky and the constellations.  First, the constellations are not what they used to be.  One would assume that if one were looking up at the sky, making up constellations for the first time, they would all be lined up with your horizon in terms of the ‘picture’ being right-side up. 

No one is going to imagine a bull on a sixty-degree angle or a water bearer pouring water upside down.  That wouldn’t make sense.  So, one would assume that the initially recorded 48 constellations would have been all aligned right side up and in alignment with the horizon, right?

With modern technologies, we can track our orbit, but we can track the orbits of the stars and use modeling to ‘backtrack’ the orbits into the past.  By doing so, we can see that the originally recorded 48 constellations all would have been in a beautifully perfect alignment about 2,900 B.C., or about 5,000 years ago.  Not 2,000 years ago that many scholars claim.

Next, if we look at Earth’s location where these constellations would have aligned with the horizon, we see that you would need to be living on Earth at around 36.5 degrees latitude.  That is, in the Northern Hemisphere at about the latitude of the Middle East.

Now, if we take the date of 2,900 B.C. and the latitude of 36.5 degrees, we see that it puts us smack into the Sumerian culture in early Sumeria, now modern-day Iran/Iraq area stretching northeast off the northern coast of the Persian Gulf.

What They Thought Isn’t What We Think

The ancient Sumerians looked up at the sky above and had constellations to help teach and communicate directly to each other.  These ancient peoples were not known for using the constellations in any way other than navigation.  And this makes sense as they didn’t have GPS as we do.  Instead, they would use the sky above at night to discern navigational direction.  And what better way to communicate than to tell another to follow a picture in the sky.

It wasn’t until about a millennia ago that people first started thinking that the heavenly bodies above affected and played a role in our day-to-day lives.  And this leads me into my modern philosophy of how the zodiac works.

How Everything Might Come To Pass

The Sun provides an immense amount of energy, raining down upon our planet every second of the day.  The Sun’s gravity holds our world in its orbit, both guarding us against flying off into space and threatening us with eventual destruction.  We know without any doubt that the Sun plays a massive and controlling role in our lives and life here on Earth.

Now, let’s look at our tiny little Moon.  Our Moon is just a tiny ball of rock compared to our Sun.  And yet, it’s gravitational pull tears at our planet’s core, keeping it churning.  And its gravity pulls our oceans, lakes, and waters.  We call it the tides, but it is the pull of the Moon’s gravity.

Let’s consider the immense effect of gravity on these other celestial bodies for a moment.  It is almost unimaginable how much they affect not only everyday life but all life on Earth.

My point in taking us down this road is that the planets above most certainly affect us.  Not only our day to day lives but life on Earth itself.  Just look how much the Sun and Moon affect us and I believe it is irrefutable evidence that the zodiac is not only possible, but it’s actually more factual than anyone was previously able to prove with science.  But who is to say that the effects of gravitational pulls and our relative position in our orbit do not affect our lives?  Especially when we know for a fact that they do affect us in immense and devastating ways.

The only real question that remains is how do the effects of the celestial bodies equate to personality archetypes of humans and how this ties together.  Here’s where ancient mysticism comes into play.  Over many, many years, observations were made about people who were born at particular times of the year.  These observations have come to be the archetypes we know today and equate to the Sun sign of the zodiac.  And without further to do, let’s jump into which breed is best for our friends, the Gemini.

As mentioned in the zodiac sign snapshot above, the Gemini exhibits traits that I’m going to group into three sections.  We’ve got the inventive, intellectual, and ingenious qualities for starters.  Second, there are the Emotional, erratic, and argumentative traits.  I like to think of these as the Sith of the Gemini traits if you don’t mind a Star Wars reference.  Last, we have the Charming and Adaptability characteristics that make the Gemini so much fun to be around.   

The first group of traits would suggest that a complementary trait would be one that is similar in nature.  The second group, being emotional and erratic, even argumentative, would suggest that patience and the empathetic dog might be the best.  One that could adapt to the changing moods of the Gemini.  The last group being similar in terms of adaptability is more of a charming focus rather than adaptability I think.  That being said, we’ll have to assume that dogs that share a sweet and positive disposition will go well with a charming Gemini.  Now for the breeds which best match these characteristics.

Australian Cattle Dog

The Australian Cattle Dog is one of my favorite breeds of dogs.  Their high energy and patient intelligence help them to spend hours tireless herding stubborn cattle.  And the breed is highly adaptive and obedient as well.  These traits make the Australian Cattle Dog a fantastic companion to any Gemini.

Border Collie

The Border Collie is another highly intelligent dog that attributes its high intelligence again to a herding history.  This breed is intelligent and energetic and loves to romp around with you and play.  The traits must be considered, such as in any intelligent breed, when thinking about care.  These dogs require exercise and mental stimulation.  For that reason, if you are an energetic Gemini, this dog may just be the perfect match for you.

Dobermann

Another of my favorite dog breeds, the Dobermann, or Doberman Pinscher as they are referred to in North America, is a highly intelligent dog breed.  Often employed for use as a guard dog, these dogs are as perceptive as they are intelligent.  The only downside, if the breed could have one, is that they will alarm you when they notice something.  That could be as simple as someone walking past your house and they could bark in alarm.  But as long as you train them properly, and again provide enough mental and physical stimulation, the Dobermann makes an excellent companion.

German Shepherd

One of the most versatile of dog breeds, the German Shepherd, is often employed by Police and other institutions for their intelligence and abilities.  The GS can learn an astounding amount of complex commands and is both highly trainable and obedient.  Add in the size of this dog and they make a perfect working dog for Police and the Military.  

The intelligence of the German Shepherd is rivaled by a few dogs.  A discerning Gemini will naturally appreciate the intelligence of this dog breed.  Not only do the GS make a great companion, but they can act as a protector or guardian as well.  Just make sure you provide them with enough mental and physical stimulation, like any other large and intelligent dog breed.

Poodle

Poodles are exquisitely intelligent.  One might not think so to look at them, but spend any length of time with a Poodle and you’ll understand exactly what I mean.  They are cunning, intelligent, and adaptive.  Able to befriend and even persuade people, the Poodle can also learn a ludicrous amount of commands and is playful and obedient.

Any Gemini who can appreciate an intelligent dog will definitely do well with a Poodle by their side.

Beagle

Beagles are not only one of the cutest dog breeds (especially the puppies) but are also one of the sweetest and most empathetic.  Beagles have a way of being understanding and loving to their family and friends.  Their playfulness is contagious and they tend to bring a host of smiles into any room they enter.

The patient and sweet nature of the Beagle makes the dog breed a prime candidate for being a great companion to the Gemini.  Being able to deal with the Gemini’s changing moods and adapting with sweet playfulness is one of the Beagle’s dominant abilities when it comes to mixing with the Gemini zodiac archetype.  Beagles make such great pets, they would do well with most of the zodiac signs, not just the Gemini.

Bernese Mountain Dog

In my mind, the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Newfoundland both strike a chord as being a nanny or nurse sort of caring animal to children and family.  And I wouldn’t be wrong.  The Bernese are kind and empathetic.  They seem to know when something is troubling you and will come over with licks of love and affection to try to cheer you up.  I can attest to this characteristic first hand, having experienced their warm nature on more than one occasion.  If ever there was a dog breed that is well-suited to the Gemini, it is the Bernese Mountain Dog.

Bulldog

Bulldogs are one of the most caring and patient dog breeds.  It’s such a contradiction to their appearance with their pouting faces.  But their nature couldn’t be any opposition to a pouting face.  The Bulldog is a sweet and kind dog breed that is characteristically patient and relaxed.  These dogs are one of the most ‘chill’ dog breeds there is.  They tolerate children, other pets, and animals and have no issues with people big or small.  The breed is fantastic for any person who might experience mood swings or just need someone who can handle their changing moods.  Ergo, the Bulldog is a fantastic match for Gemini’s erratic emotions.

Newfoundland

As I was mentioned with the Bernese, Newfoundland is a natural nanny.  So much so in fact, that these dogs have even earned a place in popular classics.  I’m sure you’ve heard of Peter Pan?  Well, do you remember the dog named Nan?  Nana was a Newfoundland who fed and cared for the children of the story and was a major part of the cartoon Disney version of the classic.  That’s how caring and patient this dog breed is.  What better dog breed suited to accompany a Gemini?

Vizsla

The sensitive and affectionate Vizsla was bred to be a close working gun dog.  They are excellent at finding birds and are natural pointers.  When it comes to their human counterpart, the Vizsla is kind, affectionate, and empathetic.  They can sense when you are upset and they often want to cuddle up with affection and stay close by your side.  I know one who is named Shadow, and the name suits as the dog loves to be right at the side of her owner at all times.  

Vizslas are natural companion dogs and love to play.  Like any of the other intelligent dog breeds, the Vizsla needs adequate exercise and mental stimulation every day, or they (like the Gemini) can become agitated.  For this reason, they are well suited to the Gemini as they will understand each other’s need for activity.

Bichon Frise

Bichon Frise is sort of a happy little sidekick sort of dog.  They are endlessly happy and tend to shed happiness whenever they enter the room.  Enjoying the spotlight, the Bichon Frise delights in entering the middle of a room of people and making their way around to greet everyone like a long-lost friend.  The Bichon truly thinks everyone is their friend, even if they may not know it yet.

It is this ultra-positive nature that makes the Bichon such an incredible companion to the Gemini and anyone else lucky enough to have one of these small white dogs in their life.

Boston Terrier

Despite being a bit saucy, the Boston Terrier is a playful and surprisingly well-behaved dog breed.  They are kind and sensitive and have an uncanny ability to sense when their favorite people are upset.  The Boston Terrier loves to cheer people up, and their quirky cute nature impresses a sense of happy confidence the moment they enter a room.

The Boston Terrier loves to play games and exercise and loves being outdoors chasing a ball or other such fun activities.  Just watch out if you need to take them on a vacation with you as many airlines will not allow them aboard flights due to their ‘squished noses’.  The technical term is brachycephalic and it means the airway is not evolved like a normal dog.  They can experience difficulty breathing and are susceptible to breathing problems due to altitude changes like those ones would experience by flying.  For that reason, the only downside to the Boston Terrier is that they are grounded from flying.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are one of the friendliest dog breeds on Earth.  When you think of a dog smiling, you think of a Golden.  At least, I do anyway.  Golden Retrievers are another dog breed that can attribute a lot of their characteristics to their days as a companion to hunters.  This companionship has been amplified over the years it seems.  Now, Goldens just love to be around people.  They love to play and have fun and are tirelessly kind and empathetic dogs as well.  They are well suited to any zodiac sign but are especially well-suited to the Gemini.

Labrador Retriever

Like the Golden Retriever, the Labrador Retriever shares a lot of the same personality characteristics.  These dogs are kind and gentle, although they can get a little rough when playing and rough-housing.  But their nature of a sweet and kind dog, like the Golden Retriever, is still the same.  The Lab is a well-suited companion for any Gemini person or even a family.

Pug

The Pug, like the Boston Terrier, is another brachycephalic dog breed.  So, again you’re grounded with this little guy (or girl).  But, they are worth being grounded for.  These dogs are ridiculously cute, playful, and friendly.  They are a smart little confident companion who has the heart and will of a large dog, inside the body of a cute little squishy-faced furry friend.  Gemini’s aren’t the only ones who get along well with the Pug.  And they even take well to the big screen in movies like Men in Black.
