How The Zodiac Works

Most people know which sign of the zodiac they are.  Or rather, which they were born into. This is your sun sign.  The common sign we all know about ourselves.

The concept of the zodiac and zodiac signs is nothing new to our modern society.  In fact, the zodiac has been around for thousands of years. But what is the zodiac anyway?

The concept of the zodiac is simple.  Ancient people would track the movement of the stars.  And the stars became groups to these ancient peoples. They then started to see that these groups of stars could be imagined into shapes and forms.  The heavens were broken down into constellations and there was now a way that ancient humans could track time over the years by tracking the movement of these pictures in the night skies.

Celestial Alignments

Now, when the Earth was in a certain place in the heavens at a particular time of the year, the constellations would have been aligned in the night sky above wherever they were being observed.  The moon played a big part in this. Where the moon was in the sky on the day of a person’s birth, would tell which moon sign this person was, for example.

The modern western zodiac uses the tropical zodiac, which is aligned with the equinoctial points.  These points are the two times a year when the center of the sun aligns with our Earth’s equator. However, some who are more interested in this form of divination would likely want to create a more accurate horoscope based upon the actual positions at the time of the person’s birth.

A Little Zodiac History (Western Zodiac)

Constellation Aquarius.
Aquarius

The first known use of this sort of concept of equating the positioning of the stars with having effects here on Earth was recorded as far back as the first millennium.  However, the stars were imagined as constellations a lot earlier than that.

There is evidence to support the idea that the original constellations were made by humans in Sumeria.  The evidence shown is as follows.

Constellation Visibility

First, there is a part of the sky which is visible in the southern hemisphere.  This part of the sky does not include any of the original group of about 48 constellations. Also, the original constellations were best seen at about 36.5 degrees, and the placement of the constellations in the sky points to about 2,900 BC.

Constellation Orientation

Second, the constellations are tipped.  The time and place on Earth when they would have originally been lined up vertically points to a similar latitude and again, about 2,900 BC.

Greek Recorded Time Of Events

Third, the recorded observations of the Greek poet Aratus with regard to the timing of certain stars aligning with rising and falling over the horizon in relation to each other tells us something else.  Using statistics of the Earth’s precession and movement, we can date back to around the same time again, and the same latitude.

These three separate observed facts all point towards the original use of constellations to 2,900 BC at around 36 degrees latitude, which points at Sumeria at the time.

But, the Sumerians did not use pictures in the sky to equate to our human personality traits.  No, they used pictures in the sky as a means of navigation and knowing location. Having constellations to know which direction to travel was at the time much more important than today’s notion of being swayed by the stars.  However, it doesn’t denounce the possibility that we are affected subtly by the star’s gravity and energies. After all, our star provides the energy behind life on Earth and gravity holds us here. I’d say they actually have a massive impact upon our lives, so maybe distant stars affecting us isn’t such a crazy idea after all.

Aquarius Traits And Characteristics

The typical Aquarius is known to be charismatic and forceful.  Often found in positions of leadership, the Aquarius has a strong personality, yet is charming and bright.

These creative individuals are well suited to artistic roles and invention tends to bend them towards a freedom-loving entrepreneurial lifestyle.

Aquarius loves to spend time with friends but also value their own time alone at the same time, if not more so.  Typical Aquarius tend to exist somewhat on the fringe of society, celebrating non-conformity, originality and artistic expression.

The Aquarian is a natural problem solver, inventor, and innovator.  However, their artistic nature combined with an almost unnatural intelligence often creates combinations of arrogance or conceited behavior.  Some would argue that these are the virtues you might find in an artistic genius or a great inventor. Needless to say, the Aquarius holds a great deal of potential.

Dog Breeds That Are Charismatic, Charming, Bright

Beagle

A Beagle dog.
The Beagle

The Beagle is a charismatic and intelligent scent hound.  It was originally created for the purpose of hunting hare.  The Beagle is so good at scenting out things that they are even used around the world by authorities who control border shipments.  Although, they still excel at hunting and retain most of their tracking and hunting instincts.

Modern Beagles originated from a pack in Essex, England in the 1830s.  Or so the story goes. Allegedly it was a man named Reverend Phillip Honeywood who established the pack, although there were others who had beagles at the time as well.  The Beagle was kept by others at the time as well, but he is the one mentioned predominantly in Wikipedia.

The breed gained prominence in the United States and Canada and the National Beagle Club of America was formed in 1888.  This shows that Beagles have been quite popular in the United States for some time. Or at least, popular enough for a club to form.

Golden Retriever

A Golden Retriever
Golden Retriever

The admirable Golden Retriever is as charming and charismatic as it is beautiful.  Their flowing blond to tan coats gives them an almost angelic appearance in the right light.  Originally bred as a gun dog, these dogs had the job of retrieving fowl that had been shot down by a hunter.  Hence, the retriever name.

These dogs are highly intelligent.  This makes them quite trainable. They also really like to play.  Take the two and put them together and the charm and positive character really pour out.  The Golden Retriever is a wonderful and beautiful dog who makes an excellent addition to any family. And also a good dog for Aquarius too!

Pug

A Pug.

Oh, to be a Pug.  These bodacious little bundles of bright energy are real charmers.  Their cute face and energetic personalities make them a wonderful little companion.  They love to make friends with other dogs.

The Pug has been a companion and charismatic character as far back as the Ming dynasty in China.  They are considered one of the toy breeds and were often used as companion dogs by royalty.

Due to the breed being a brachycephalic breed, they can be restricted by some airlines and special care should be taken if the dog is around water deeper than 6 inches.

Yorkshire Terrier

A Yorkie (Yorkshire Terrier) sticks out its tongue panting in this photo.
Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie for short, is a short breed with a tall personality.  Their charismatic and independent personalities really help them stand larger than life.  I truly think that inside these dogs believe they run the show, so to speak. But they are so charming about it, you almost can’t help but let them do their thing (to a point of course).

The Yorkie is a great dog if you are an urbanite, apartment life is fine with these dogs.  You just have to remember that with big personality comes big energy. Be prepared to pay lots of attention to the dog and it will need a lot of walks and engagement to keep its charming little brain fulfilled.

Good Dog Breeds For Aquarius That Are Forceful And Strong

Akita

An American Akita is shown outdoors in winter in this photo.
An American Akita

The Akita is a beautiful and powerful dog originating in Japan.  The Japanese breed, the Akita Inu, is as powerful as it is intelligent.  They are often employed for the purpose of guarding property. Their American counterparts, the American Akita is not far off themselves.

The dog originated in the mountainous regions of northern Japan.  This mountainous origin points to being the reason for the Akitas thick coat that acts as an insulated cozy blanket around these dogs.  This fact has allowed the Akita to adapt well to life in North America, with her harsh winters. This strength shows how they are truly a good dog for an Aquarius.

The strong Akita tends to be quite loving with their family and those they are familiar with.  However, they can be territorial to strangers. This territorial nature is what has made the Akita a great guard dog.  And because they can be quite gentle and loving to their family, they make a good choice for a family dog that will guard the home and kids.

American Staffordshire Terrier

These not so little barrels of strength are smart and confident.  They can be quite forceful and push their weight around if not trained properly from a young age.  But, if properly trained, these dogs are amazingly courageous and confident companions.

The history of the ‘Staff’ is an interesting one to say it in a safe fashion.  The breed originated likely in England but was also known quite early in Ireland.  And by the mid-1800s, the breed had made its way to the Americas.

The reason I said their history is interesting is that they were known in America for fighting and an offshoot breed was formed from these fighting dogs.  They would become the American Pit Bull Terrier. From pit fighting.

I am happy to report that no dogs are used for any kind of pit fighting, at least not legally that I am aware of. And these dogs are actually really awesome and confident. That’s one of the many reasons why they are on the list of the best dog breeds for Aquarius.

Husky

A Young Husky

The Husky is a beautiful thick-coated dog that originated from the northern regions of both North America and also Siberia. These are true Arctic dogs.  They are no stranger to the cold. And they can run. Boy, can they run? These dogs were bred for it. And that yearn to run can make them a bit forceful.  And it’s a good thing, I’ll tell you why.

The Arctic wastes are no place you want to be caught out in.  Indigenous peoples sometimes have to travel some great distances across these frozen wastelands to find their source of food.

Now let’s say you’re a father and you and your son have traveled by dog sled for two days to find a Harp Seal to hunt.  And you get the seal, but it weighs 280 pounds (about 130 kilograms). Now, if you have one or even two strong teams of sled dogs, you could strap your kill to your sled and make the journey home to feed your family and of course, your dogs.

There is little chance you’d be able to do a journey with a kill like that without the dogs.  You’d need a few hunters at least and you’d have to share the weight to carry it back to camp.

Anyway, more to the common Husky.  These are absolutely beautiful dogs.  Their distinctive coat is wolf-like, speaking to their ancestry involving the Grey Wolf.  They were bred for energy and to run, pulling a sled. They need to run, and you need to provide them with ample ability to do so.  But, keep them controlled because they can run for hours and hours and could literally run right out of town.

Rottweiler

A Rottweiler rests its head in this photo.
A Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is a bold and beautiful dog.  They have a sturdy and athletic build with a slightly intimidating look.  And they know it. These dogs are strong and powerful and don’t mind throwing their weight around.

A Rottweiler is a big dog that will lean its weight into you to get you to move.  They aren’t bullies, they are just ‘forward’. Some would say they are guilty of being a bit pushy.

I had a fishing buddy who had a Rottweiler who used to come out fishing with us.  It was a female and she was indeed quite pushy, but I think maybe also a bit spoiled.  She was gentle and would never bite someone who wasn’t aggressive towards her family, but she wasn’t afraid to barge into any room, pushing doors open or pushing her way past people to get where she wanted.

Dog Breeds That Are Creative, Problem Solvers, And Inventive

Border Collie

The intelligent Border Collie is shown in this photo.
Border Collie up close and personal.

One of the hardest working dogs, the Border Collie, is intelligent and playful.  They can be trained, they are problem solvers and have even been on television.  Take the Little House on The Prairie or the sitcom Mad About You. Both of these television shows had Border Collies as members of the cast. And like many in Hollywood, the best dogs for an Aquarius are often those which carry the traits of an Aquarian themselves.

The Border Collie originated in Scotland, where it was bred for the purpose of herding sheep.  This dog breed was selectively bred to get the traits of intelligence and obedience as high as possible.  The dog had to be smarter than the animals it was herding. And it had to be able to adapt, nearly instantly, to movements of the sheep it was herding.  This gave the dogs an inherent ability to be inventive and natural creative problem solvers.

Due to the intelligence of the Border Collie, and their need to perform work, you need to be prepared to take these dogs to the park a lot.  They need ample activity to stimulate their intelligent minds and also provide exercise. Without this, you may find the dog develops behavioral problems so make sure you play with them a lot. Do this and they just might be your best dog breed for an Aquarius.

Doberman Pinscher

Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman Pinscher, or Dobermann as it’s called back in Europe, is a large dog of German origins.  The dog is typically known as being black with rust-colored feet and lower muzzle. But they can also be a reddish bronze sort of color.

Dobermans are the western quintessential guard dog.  They are highly intelligent and thus creative. They can be driven and even stubborn, but with proper training are quite loyal and loving.  Once you have one for a while, you’ll see the subtle ways they are creative with how they try to get what they want from you. This is especially true with regard to their favorite treats of course.

The Dobermann is a known ally to the Aquarius personality.  They are intelligent and the majority of Aquarius hold this trait to be highly regarded with respect making the Dobermann a dog that is good for Aquarius people.

German Shepherd

The classic German Shepherd is shown in this picture.
The German Shepherd

Known as a highly intelligent and versatile working dog, the German Shepherd is no stranger to problem solving and creativity.  These dogs are so intelligent and trainable that they are used around the world for both police and service dog roles.

The German Shepherd is a relatively new dog.  With its origins dating back to the recent 1899 in Germany where the dog breed was first official appearance. This dog breed is one of the best for an Aquarius.

The GS is a highly trainable and intelligent dog.  This makes them naturally inventive and creative with how they are able to figure things out.  One of their key abilities is their ability to understand training which is not an easy task for many dogs.  This natural ability has made them world-renowned working dogs. The quintessential family all-around working dog.

Poodle

A Standard Poodle is shown in this file photo.
Hello! I’m A Standard Poodle!

Last on our list is the highly intelligent poodle.  These dogs may not appear to be highly intelligent, due to their narrow skull, but don’t let their appearance fool you.  According to the AKC, these dogs are wickedly intelligent which got them a slot as one of the top dog breeds for Aquarius.

When you have a dog this smart, they are naturally inventive.  And Poodles are natural problem solvers too. Don’t think they can’t figure out how to get a treat you thought you hid well.  And short of having a lock on a door, they might even figure out how to open the door.

Poodles are also incredible athletes.  They are energetic and athletic, so a decent amount of playtime and activities that will allow them to blow off steam is definitely required for this breed.   These dogs will get along just fine with most Aquarians, showing respect for intelligent beings that is.

And those are the good dogs for an Aquarius. I hope you’ve enjoyed the article. Please let me know in the comments below which dog breed you think would be a good fit to join the list of best dogs for an Aquarius. We’d love to hear what you think!
